Metal Roof Soundproofing
Soundproofing of Raindrop Impact Noise on Metal Roof of Deakin University Performance Art Building
Acoustic Consultant: Marshall Day Acoustics
Location: Building P, Deakin University, 221 Burwood Hwy, Burwood VIC
By permission from Deakin University
Rain Noise Issues
- Use of the building: Performance centre and performance art theatre
- Roof construction: Metal roofing - colourbond Klip-Lok flat roofing panels
- Noise issue: The raindrop impact noise was disruptive during performances
Soundproofing Product Requirements
- must be applied on the top of the existing roof without having to remove its panels
- must survive full weather exposure, such as UV and rain
- must provide sufficient noise reduction
- must have a pleasant appearance
- must be easy to install
Megasorber's Soundproofing Solution
Megasorber engineers worked with the client to design a customised soundproofing solution that
specifically met the project requirements.
Megasorber D14–150, a self-adhesive vibration damping sheet, was custom designed to fit within the ridges of the aluminium roof
with a customized sheet size of 150mm (width) x 1000mm (length) to damp the impact noise of the rain.
Key Features of Megasorber D14 Vibation Damping Sheets
- High damping performance: typical noise reduction is about 20dB(A) when tested on a large freely suspended colourbond panel
for impact noise reduction.
- High temperature resistance: can withstand temperature up to 200°C (short term exposure).
- Excellent bonding strength: has a unique in-built adhesive system and a high bonding strength with metal panels.
- Easy to handle: can be custom sized to fit.
- Low installation cost: specifically designed to be applied onto the flat section of the roof panels with a simple “peel and
stick-on”. Existing roofing panels do not have to be removed.

Results
- Cost effective soundproofing solution without having to remove the existing roofing panels.
- Megasorber D14 applied to the top of the metal roof, providing extra cushion effect when the rain drops impact the metal roof panel, in addition
to the vibration damping.
- Coverage of about 50% to 60% of the total area resulting in a substantial cost saving in installation.
