Reducing Plant Room Noise

Generator or plant rooms tend to have high noise levels, up to 115dB(A), with noise concentrated in the low to mid-frequency range. The high noise level can cause discomfort to nearby facilities without proper soundproofing treatment.

The unique features of Megasorber FM and P range products for plant room noise reduction

Megasorber FM and P range products have a non-combustible, tough and durable Soundmesh G8 facing. The products provide superior sound absorption utilising the patented sound absorption technology, especially for low and mid-frequency noise.  The key features are shown in the schematic drawing below.

Demonstration of echo noise reduction

A scout hall with polished floorboards, plasterboard ceiling and walls, – these surfaces are highly reflective to sound.  The hall was very echoey, causing poor speech intelligibility.  This newly constructed hall was deemed unusable by the scout group.  To reduce the reverberation, 50mm thick Megasorber acoustic panels were installed on the ceiling and on the walls.

Demonstration of fire resistance

Megasorber FM is inherently fire-resistant and has Building Code Australia (BCA) Group 1 fire rating as per AS 5637.1-2015 and ISO 5660 Group 1 fire classification.

No ignition, melting, dripping or spread of flame when exposed to fire.  A demonstration video is shown below.

Soundproofing treatments

Three treatment options are as follows:

1.  Ecconormic solution:  Megasorber FM50 or Megasorber P50

Install Megasorber FM50 or P50 on the walls and ceiling, using A200 adhesive. Cover edges and joints between panels with colourbond trim.  Alternatively, seal joints between panels with colour-matching Soundmesh G8 tape.

2.  Quiet solution:  Megasorber FM100 or Megasorber P100

Install Megasorber FM100 or P100 on the walls and ceiling using A200 adhesive. Cover edges and joints between panels with colourbond trim.  Alternatively, seal joints between panels with colour-matching Soundmesh G8 tape.

3.  Super-quiet Solution:

This system addresses absorption and transmission loss through a noise barrier layer in addition to absorption panels.

Install battens on the wall and ceiling of the plant room and fix a sandwich of Megasorber B8 and two layers of plasterboard/ply / MDF / FC sheet. Adding mineral fibre batts in the cavity will increase the performance of this system. Install Megasorber P100 or FM100 to the outside of the sandwich layers, using A200 adhesive. Mechanical fixing is recommended when installing in an overhead position.
